Window in Time
There is something about old things and ruins that intrigues me. They remind me that there is much more to history than just the part I know, that there is a big, wonderful story continually unfolding through the years and through the lives of people all over the earth.
This particular old arch was along the coast road in Madeira. I saw it and said “stop the car.” It was too perfect to pass up. I had to get a picture. I still held it in my mind and finally painted it a few years ago when I was working on paintings of water. Madeira is a small Portuguese Island 50 miles off the coast of Africa, close to the Canary Islands. There is something about old things and ruins that intrigues me. They remind me that there is much more to history than just the part I know, that there is a big, wonderful story continually unfolding through the years and through the lives of people all over the earth.
